About the university
The S. José de Cluny Nursing School was founded in 1940 by Mother Pedro Tavares, Nurse at the Pasteur Hospital in Paris, at the request of a group of Madeirans, with good intellectual, moral and social preparation. Initially the Course lasted one year. On October 13, 1948 ESESJC is recognized by Order of the Assistant Secretary of State for Social Assistance. It was legalized under the terms of article 3 of the Nursing Schools regulation, approved by Dec. Law nº 38885 of August 28, 1952. This Institution was endowed with pedagogical and technical autonomy from its origin, and its direction and teaching are the responsibility of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, with the collaboration of Nurses and other Health Technicians. With the integration of Nursing Education in Polytechnic Higher Education, the School became known as the Nursing School of S. José de Cluny. At present, it is endowed with legal personality and enjoys scientific, pedagogical, cultural, disciplinary, administrative and financial autonomy, with respect for the basic principles and rules of the National System of Higher Education contained in the Law. The School of Nursing of S. José de Cluny was recognized by ordinance nº795 / 91 of August 9.
