Conditions for Admission To enter the PhD program, the candidate must satisfy the conditions stipulated in the Portuguese legislation, as well as the following set of requirements: - Have a master's or post-graduate degree in computer science, electrical engineering and computers, multimedia communication, or any other similar area of training. - A degree from a national or international institution recognized by the scientific committee of the doctoral program. - Have a professional or scientific curriculum considered relevant to the doctoral program by the scientific committee of this program. - Applicants must speak and write English fluently. The number of candidates to be admitted is 15. In the event that there is not a minimum number of candidates that justifies the opening and operation of NEMPS, candidates that meet the conditions listed above may be provisionally selected, and the granting of a doctoral degree will be limited to the preparation of an original thesis especially prepared for this purpose, in accordance with paragraph a) of art. 31 of Decree-Law 74/2006 of March 24, as amended by Decree-Law 107/2008 of June 2 and Decree-Law 230/2009 of September 14. However, admission and enrollment in doctoral studies, under these conditions, requires approval by the NEMPS Scientific Committee to which a written request must be submitted by the candidate, accompanied by any opinions of the proposed tutor or advisor. Future Studies Due to the innovative nature of the PhD in Computer Science and its similarities with European programs of international reference in the area of digital media and pervasive communication systems, there are several factors that are expected to provide opportunities in the course of the implementation of the doctoral program, namely: (i) increase in the demand for the doctoral program; (ii) allow to take advantage of the technologies analyzed by the students in the course of the doctoral program; (iii) develop new research opportunities in niche markets; (iv) increase collaborations with institutional, academic and industry partners; (iv) increase the internationalization network through cooperation with other higher education institutes (national and international) that present aligned interests and methodology. Career Prospects The area of Internet services and in particular new media associated with the Internet, as a pervasive medium, presents growing employability, and is also an environment susceptible to entrepreneurship and, therefore, to facilitate the development of micro-economy, based on multidisciplinary projects. The growing increase of services such as Social Media and the growing intrusion of the Internet in the daily routine of society point to no reversal of the current trend in the medium-term.
