About the university
The Pontifical University of Salamanca was born on September 25, 1940, when Pope Pius XII signed the Decree of Foundation, acceding to the request of the Spanish Episcopal Conference. The Spanish bishops took up the wish of Cardinal Enrique Pla and Deniel, a true architect of the University, who did not cease in his efforts to restore the studies of Theology and Canon Law, suppressed by the confiscation of Mendizabal on May 21, 1852. The UPSA, therefore, emerges as such in the twentieth century and its roots in the XIII, when King Alfonso IX of Leon founded the Salmantine Study in the winter of 1218-19. Nevertheless, the true impeller of this nascent University of Salamanca was King Alfonso X the Wise, who granted him the Statute of 1254, also known as the Magna Carta of the Salmantino Study, which represents a splendid legal framework and economic base. With this statute, the University was definitively constituted in its double character of Real and Pontifical. At that time the support of the Church was decisive for the academic and economic support of the institution.
