About the university
National University "Ostroh Academy" - the successor to the first institution of higher education Eastern nations - Ostroh Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy. Founded in 1576 by Prince Vasyl-Kostiantyn of Ostroh. A large amount of money to build the academy gave his niece - Princess Halshka Ostrog. Basically, Ostroh Academy was the traditional medieval Europe, but it is unusual for Ukrainian school, studying seven free sciences (grammar, rhetoric, dialectic, arithmetic, geometry, music, astronomy) and the higher sciences, philosophy, theology, Medicine. Students of the Academy mastered five languages: Slavic, Polish, Hebrew, Greek, Latin. The originality of this establishment was in the fact that here for the first time combines the two types of cultures, Byzantine and Western European. Connected with Ostroh Academy renaissance of the Ukrainian people.
