Whether you’re interested in domestic animals, exotic species or farm animals, studying the science and technology of the field is a gateway to many rewarding careers. Our degree course in Animal Science will give you the academic and practical experience to ultimately take your pick from a range of careers including a nutritionist, laboratory technician and veterinary specialist. On this specialist Animal Science degree, you will gain in-depth laboratory training and practical animal handling and husbandry skills – all underpinned by a strong theoretical core of knowledge relevant to a range of animal species and animal business contexts. When it comes to applying your knowledge, you will have the added advantage of commercial experience and entrepreneurial nous, developed on a work experience placement during the summer holiday after your first year. This will significantly strengthen your portfolio, whether you use it to gain future employment or continue your studies in a range of animal-related subjects, including farm animals, equine, wildlife and zoology-based areas. Upon successful completion of the foundation degree, you will have the opportunity to progress on to an appropriate BSc Honours top-up programmes delivered or validated by the RAU, including BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Management, BSc Honours Equine Studies, BSc Honours Wildlife Conservation, BSc Honours Animal Science & Management. Progression opportunities will also be available to appropriate Honours conversion courses at other HEIs in the UK. Modules studied on this course include: Year one 1308 Bioscience Laboratory Skills 1 1312 Anatomy and Physiology 1 1309 Fundamentals of Biology 1310 Animal husbandry 1311 Introduction to Animal Behaviour, Ethics and Environmental Impact 1115 Work Based Learning 1 Year two 2309 Bioscience Laboratory Skills 2 2310 Animal Health and Nutrition 2307 Genetics and Breeding Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Animal Science sector 2131 Work Based Learning 2 Specialist Elective [focused on either agriculture, equine, wildlife or exotic/companion animal species] ENTRY CRITERIA Typical offers A Level: CD – min.56 UCAS Tariff points (to include at least one A Level pass.) BTEC: MPP GCSE: (Minimum five GCSEs) - English and Mathematics (or Maths Numeracy for Welsh applicants) at Grade C / 4 or higher are required. International Baccalaureate: 24 points. Whilst a Level 3 science background is preferred, the programme has been structured to enable those without a science subject at level 3, but who are keen to follow such a route, to enter and progress through the programme.
