The progress made in doctoral training in Vision Science in Spain has been strengthened in the past few years with the creation of the Thematic Networks for Cooperative Research from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III ("RETICs"). These networks required a training program for researchers linked preferably to a doctoral programme. Thus, RETIC 03/13, devoted to the «Prevention of Blindness» initially undertook that role and its training program was the University Doctoral Programme in Vision Science. The Network was periodically renewed and its successor today is the Network of Ocular Pathology linked to aging, Visual Quality and Quality of Life (RD07/0062/ 0013). The Doctoral Programme in Vision Sciences continues as its own training programme.
