About the university
Heidelberg College of Church Music and its predecessors, the Protestant Church Music Institute in Heidelberg, was founded by Hermann Meinhard Poppen in 1931 to improve the church music education of the Badische Landeskirche. Vorbild war das Kirchenmusikalische Institut in Leipzig, wo Poppen zuvor studiert hatte, unter anderem beim Gründer des dortigen Instituts, dem Organisten Karl Straube. Angeboten wurden in Heidelberg sämtliche kirchenmusikalische Fächer (Orgelspiel und andere Instrumentalfächer, Chorleitung, Gesang) sowie Theoriefächer (Harmonielehre, Kontrapunkt, Generalbass, Stilkunde) in mehreren Studiengängen. Zunächst im Gebäude Anlage 62 untergebracht, wurde ab 1965 ein Neubau in der Hildastraße geplant, der 1971 bezogen werden konnte und bis heute genutzt wird.
