About the university
The Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg (Nuremberg University of Music) is the most recently established institution in Germany to offer an academic musical training, but it can look back on a long and firmly-rooted tradition. The third State University of Music in Bavaria was inaugurated in Nuremberg in 2008. It was created from the Meistersinger-Konservatorium and the communal University of Music Nuremberg-Augsburg. Around 400 students are now trained here in the basic areas of study – musical performance and music education – in the heart of the metropolitan region of Nuremberg. Courses are offered in all the orchestra instruments, but also in singing, piano, organ, guitar, accordion and classical saxophone. There is also a lively jazz department, which is thoroughly integrated in the clubs of the city, and a department of early music, which regularly attracts unusual events to Nuremberg, thanks to its links throughout Europe. The department of Elementary Music Education (EMP) coordinates and creates projects in musical education for young people as well as adults. The symphony orchestra, the madrigal choir, the University of Music choir, the Big Band and many other chamber music ensembles and jazz groups enrich the cultural variety of the city. Together with the State Theatre the University of Music runs the International Opera Studio; Early Music Days and symposia take place regularly in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in co-operation with the University of Music. A study centre of the University of Music is being set up in Neumarkt/Oberpfalz.
