About the university
The Academy of Music Saar (HfM) in Saarbrücken was founded in 1947 after the example of the Conservatoire de Paris as the State Conservatory Saarbrücken. After the establishment of institutes for Catholic church music (1951) and school music (1952), it was included in the circle of Westdeutscher Musikhochschulen in 1957 after the incorporation of Saarland into the Federal Republic of Germany and as a ninth member in the Rector's Conference. In 1971 the Saarbrücken College of Music was transferred to Saarland University and moved to a new building in Bismarckstrasse. In 1974 the Musikhochschule received a new organ from the company Johannes Klais from Bonn for its concert hall . In 1988 the main building was supplemented by an extension building. In 1994, the Musikhochschule was renamed to Saarland University of Music and Theater , whose name was changed after the closing of the course 2002 in the Hochschule für Musik Saar . Since 2007, the integration of the building of the former Schiller-Schule opposite the HfM has provided additional teaching rooms. At present, about 400 students are enrolled in the HfM Saar.
