About the university
Founded in 1950 as “State School of Music”, today’s Hamburg School of Music and Theater (HfMT) is located in Pöseldorf – one of Hamburg’s most beautiful districts along the Outer Alster Lake. Home to several internationally renowned artists, scientists and lecturers, HfMT – since 2004 under the leadership of its president Prof. Elmar Lampson – provides the highest level of artistic education to more than 750 students. With several inhouse-ensembles (including a symphonic orchestra) as well as opera and drama productions, HfMT offers its students several opportunities to gain practical experience at a professional level. This work-oriented educational approach is furthermore complemented by several international projects and close cooperation with several established Hamburg orchestras and theaters. With more than 400 events per year, HfMT remains among Hamburg’s most prominent cultural institutions. Students at HfMT also immensely benefit from Hamburg’s outstanding orchestras, theaters, opera houses and museums which not only provide a high quality of life but also attest to Hamburg’s atmosphere as “Gateway to the world” on a cultural level.
